10,000 saplings planted by Vivek to mark World Environment Day
Chennai: Several events were conducted in different parts of the state to mark World Environment Day.
Vivek, comedian and actor, inaugurated the Go Green initiative of 'Thuimai Arunai, a non-governmental the organisation, to promote and sustain greener surroundings and planted 10,000 saplings in Thiruvannamalai.
Actor Vivek, M.L.A E.V Velu, Environmental activists and the public gathered to plant 10,000 saplings in Tiruvannamalai on Wednesday morning.
Speaking at the inauguration, Vivek urged people to rebuild the lost green cover and emphasised the importance of trees in society today. He told the public to plant more saplings to get rain. "It is our responsibility to plant saplings and rebuild the environment. Planting trees should be a part of our everyday lives," he asserted. Vivek, an ambassador of late president Abdul Kalam's green movement has been planting saplings in several parts of TN over the last few years.
Isha Project GreenHands hosted tree plantation drive was organised at Chennai Anna University in which Vice-Chancellor, Anna University participated. Isha's Project GreenHands (PGH) launched its planting season for 2019 to enable planting of 50 Lakh saplings this year through its 40 nurseries. Similar launch functions and other awareness programs were conducted in over 25 districts including Coimbatore, Erode, Trichy, Salem, Madurai, Tiruvannamalai, Chennai, Kanyakumari districts and Pondicherry in more than 100 places. At the end of the event, saplings were distributed at free of cost.

ITC Ltd. announced another a unique initiative to recycle the Multi-Layered Plastic (MLP) packaging waste, a category of waste which so far has remained largely unaddressed by the current waste management solutions and programmes in the country at the desired scale.
The employees of Indian Overseas Bank enthusiastically participated in the World Environment Day activity by planting tree saplings. K. Swaminathan, Executive Director, Indian Overseas Bank and Shri. Ajay Kumar Srivastava, Executive Director, Indian Overseas Bank inaugurated the "Sapling Drive" by planting saplings at the Staff Training College, Anna Nagar, Chennai.
