TN govt to act after Supreme Court order on releasing Rajiv convicts
Chennai: Responding to the issue raised by Nagapattinam legislator Thamimun Ansari, in the Assembly, Mr. Shanmugam said the Tamil Nadu government would decide its future course of action based on the Supreme Court’s judgment in the case pertaining to the Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution recommending commutation of sentence to Rajiv Gandhi assassins.
Stating that the court had granted three months’ time to the Centre to convey its view on the TN’s resolution, the Minister asserted that there was no change in the State government’s stand on setting the convicts at liberty.
“There is no second opinion that these convicts should be freed,” Mr. Shanmugam, said and pointed out that TN’s decision to release the lifers was a policy decision of late chief minister Jayalalithaa.
