Hyderabad: South Central Railways will be conducting checks to ensure that only permitted baggage is carried on board by passengers and excess baggage is carried in the luggage van.
According to the rules of Indian Railways, passengers booking seats in advance are permitted to book excess luggage in advance at the same time, which will be stowed in the luggage van.
A spokesperson for the South Central Railways told this newspaper, "Extensive checks to curb carrying of excess luggage are being carried out. This will ensure convenience to passengers during their travel. We've had these baggage rules since long but we are just conducting these checks extensively in summer as there is a huge rush of passengers because of the holidays."
There is no restriction on luggage in the brake van of passenger trains. But excess luggage in the owner's charge beyond the free allowance is charged at 1.5 times the stipulated amount as penalty.
