Making the world a better place on Environment Day
Bengaluru: The World Environment Day saw the launch of a number of campaigns to create awareness against the use of plastic, sapling plantation drives and message to citizens to adopt a plastic-free city.
CM H.D. Kumaraswamy and Jayanagar by-poll Congress candidate Soumya Reddy planted a sapling at Jayanagar, while Union minister Ananth Kumar, his wife Tejaswini, who is Adamya Chethana chairperson, Chickpet MLA Udaya Garudachar and actor Tara Anuradha and Basavanagudi MLA Ravi Subramanya planted saplings in Lalbagh.
Environmentalists and members of Rally for Rivers held a demonstration on the ill-effects of plastic on environment in front of Dr Ambedkar's statue near Vidhana Soudha. They demanded a total ban on the use of plastic items like bottles, containers and plastic bags.
Welcoming the Union government's initiative, Mr Ahmed ElSheikh, president and CEO, PepsiCo India said, "Our 2025 goal is to design all packaging to be recoverable or recyclable, and support increased recycling of plastic waste."
The alumni of Karnataka Navodaya Vidyalayas and Forest Department have announced that they would disperse one crore seed balls across the state on June 10. Withe support of BBMP, Anganwadi workers, citizen groups and members of United Way of Bengaluru have decided to dedicate themselves to increasing the tree cover in the city this entire month. The first phase of the campaign from June 5-16 is a plantation drive where over 40,000 saplings will be planted across lakes in Bengaluru that United Way Bengaluru helped rejuvenate.
The Embassy Group has partnered with Red FM for a radio campaign, "Ee Saala Cup Namde", to promote menstrual hygiene and sustainable menstrual practices. The group placed prominent red bins for employees at Manyata Business Park to propagate safe and hygienic disposal of sanitary waste. Mayor R. Sampath Raj visited the business park to encourage the campaign.
