Korattur lake cleaned up by school students
Chennai: Spread over 990 acres, the Korattur lake has been contaminated with sewage and industrial effluents from surrounding areas such as Pattaravakkam, Athipet and Ambattur. The lake is one of a chain of three water bodies, including the Ambattur eri and the Madhavaram eri, where surplus water from one is transported to another.
The water from Korattur lake had been supplied to Chennai residents for a brief period when there was a shortage in the late 1970s. However, now the lake is coated with water hyacinth and there is no way for the water to flow out.
Considering the unclean situation of the lake, students and faculties of St Peter's Institute of Higher Education Research conducted an awareness program on the theme- ‘Beat plastic pollution’ at Korattur lake inaugurated by tahsildar Madhan Kuppu Raj. During the program, students and faculties cleaned the Korattur lake by disposing of plastics and other wastes.
