Hyderabad High Court asks for report on prisoners

132 prisons prisons across the country are overcrowded with 150 per cent prisoners, which SC called the violation of human rights.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Tuesday directed the state governments of AP and Telangana to file reports on inmates in prisons of both states A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice K. Vijaya Lakshmi was dealing with a matter referred by the Supreme Court asking the High Court to issue directions to the state governments to take up seriously the issue relating to housing inmates over and above the capacity of a prison as it amounts to violation of human rights.

Stating that 132 prisons across the country are overcrowded with 150 per cent prisoners, the Supreme Court has directed the High Court to take up the issue as suo motto to ensure that both state governments to take steps to recruit adequate staff in the prisons in order to maintain good prison administration.

While issuing the noti-ces to the both governments, the bench directed the authorities concerned to file affidavits detailing the prisons’ sanctioned strength of the staff, its inmate holding capacity and the actual number of prisoners in each jail within three weeks.
