Nellore: Official on toes as fires break out in forest area

Nearly 40 acres of Seshachalam forest destroyed.

Nellore: Forest fires in different parts of Seshachalam forest has been keeping the forest and fire wing personnel of TTD on their toes from the last two days. A forest official said, wildfires have been noticed in the forest area close to TTD Vedapatashala at Dharma-giri hills in Tirumala on Monday. According to officials, a fire was broke out in the Ghadi Kona area of Seshachalam Forest and soon spread to several adjacent areas during the early hours of Sunday.

Though the TTD forest field staff managed to put off the fire by around 2.30 pm on Sunday, fire continued in some inaccessible areas and the situation aggravated in the early hours of Monday because of strong winds. The fire spread to Thapovanam which is situated adjacent to Dharmagiri. The fire ravaged nearly 40 acre here for hours and the area was enveloped in smoke.

After a five hour struggle, the TTD forest staff managed to put off the fire. Yet in some parts of Seshachalam forest, the fire was raging as the officials were unable to reach the spot. According to sources in forest wing, the fire broke out in the early hours of Monday and spread to Srigandham plantation area which is located nearer to TTD Vedapatashala at Dharmagiri hills.

The staff here alerted the TTD forest personnel and fire department, who rushed to the spot and put of fire after an hour struggle. “The flames flared up on Sunday at Ghadi Kona was completely put off by our forest staff. But unfortunately the fire which was unattended from the stretches of Kalyani dam forest spread to Thapovanam in the early hours on Monday,” the forest officials said.
