KOZHIKODE: In the 14th mass marriage sans dowry organised by the Wayanad Muslim Orphanage Trust, 50 couples including five Hindu pairs, tied nuptial knot on Saturday.

The function was inaugurated by Panakkad Sayyid Munavvar Ali Shihab Thangal who led the marriage ceremonies for Muslim couples. Thangal said such mass marriages are integral part of teaching religious harmony in society.

WMO president K.K. Ahammed Haji presided over the function and delivered the keynote address. The marriage of Hindu couples was conducted at the Jeddah Hostel at WMO campus where Swami Athmadas Yami served as the chief guest.  He said such acts are very relevant in the present day society; He also added that married life was supreme than monasticism.

Noorbina Rasheed inaugurated a special function held for women later in connection with the mass marriage, on a turf where 7000 people could be seated.

Started in 2005, the trust has so far married off 1806 couples. NP Hafis Muhammed imparted a pre-marriage counselling for brides and bridegrooms.

The organizers provided five sovereigns of gold to each bride and one to bridegroom apart from a delicious feast and wedding dress. More than thousand volunteers attached to 50 subcommittees through dedicated service ensured the smooth conduct of the mass marriage.
