Karnataka Government digs in for tunnel roads

George says it will improve traffic flow, Public opinion to be considered

BENGALURU: Bengaluru Development Minister K. J. George reiterated that the state government was firm on taking up the tunnel road project at crucial locations of the city to solve congestion on the surface roads.

After the inspection of certain infrastructure projects at Hennur and surrounding areas he told reporters that the city's vehicle population has increased to Rs 65 lakh, causing traffic congestion in most parts of the city and needs solutions like underground road links.

However, the public opinion will be obtained before implementing the project.

It may be recalled that a six-member delegation from ISA West Construction, a Bulgarian Infrastructure company, had made a presentation about the construction of the tunnel roads in the city. The company has experience of making such roads, said highly placed sources.

Tunnel roads were proposed between, Hebbal to Anugraha (CMs official residence), Goragunte Palya to Peenya, Nayandahalli junction to Majestic (Shantala Silks or mini Lalbagh) and Jalahalli to Goragunte Palya.

Further, he said that a tree park and a sports stadium would come up to benefit the general public at the Hennur Bande area. The facility will come up on 16 acres at the Hennur quarry.

It will also have a school building and a swimming pool apart from other facilities. He directed officials to come up with a blueprint for the same.

The Hennur flyover, which links Lingarajpuram and Hennur, remains incomplete due to the land acquisition issue. The land acquisition process is almost in final stage and the work will be taken up and the sanctum sanctorum of the Anjaneya temple will not be affected, assured Mr George.

In his address, BBMP commissioner N. Manjunath Prasad said that in a bid to green the city the civic body has taken up afforestation and aims to plant Rs 10 lakh saplings.
