22 busiest roads in Hyderabad to get white-topped

The work was to have begun in summer but the delay in administrative sanction of Rs 600 crore has pushed the project back.

Hyderabad: Over 58 km on stretches of some 22 of the busiest roads including at Liberty, Durgam Cheruvu and Charminar, will be dug up post-monsoon. These roads will have stormwater drains, sewer lines, utility duct, footpaths, paved shoulders and markings and will be white-topped.

The work was to have begun in summer but the delay in administrative sanction of Rs 600 crore has pushed the project back.

“Unlike black-topped roads, white topped roads are cost-effective, require relatively less maintenance and have a life span of 10-15 years if they are not cut,” said GHMC, projects, chief engineer

He said the white topping prevents water-logging during rains and helps keep the roads intact. Fly ash and polymeric fibre are used to white-top the roads, besides cement and sand, to strengthen the surface.

The GHMC official said drinking water and sewerage pipelines and electric lines must be replaced on a priority basis before work on the road is taken up, to avoid digging. A white-top roads costs Rs 75 lakh per km.
