Hyderabad cabbie gets stuck in lift grille, saved

Mahesh was left hanging upside down for two hours.

Hyderabad: A 28-year-old man had a miraculous escape on Wednesday night when his leg got stuck in a lift in an apartment complex in Jubilee Hills. Mr Mahesh, a driver, was coming down to the ground floor after dropping his owner in his flat. His leg got stuck in the lift and he was left hanging upside down for around two hours. He was rescued by fire officials.

Residents of Venkateswara Nilayam Apartment in Jubilee Hills said Mahesh had gone to his employer’s third floor apartment at around 9 pm after parking the car. While coming down, he got stuck in the lift.

Due to the sudden jerk in the lift, he slipped and one of his legs got stuck in the lift’s grille. The lift pulled him up and he was left hanging upside down. Hearing his screams, residents alerted the fire service.

“The lift got stuck between the second and third floors. We tried opening it with some tools, but it did not work. Later, a rescue tender from Moula Ali was rushed to the spot and we spread the grille apart and released his leg,” said Film Nagar fire officer Mohan. Later, with the help of residents, a hole was dug in the wall and Mahesh was pulled out of the lift.

Though the residents accused the apartment owner of negligence, the owner, Mr Venkatesh said, “Maintenance is not at the issue. We spent '7 lakh on it. This is a clear accident. His leg slipped and got caught in between the grille.”

Mr Mahesh escaped with bruises on his leg and other minor injuries. He was shifted to a private hospital and discharged after first aid. No complaint regarding the incident was filed with the police.
