Kochi: Darknet, infamously known as the underworld in cyber space, comprises closed networks accessible to a group of people and is not linked by popular search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing. It is often associated with the encrypted part of the internet called Tor network where illicit trading takes place. Silk Road was the first modern Darknet market in Tor network, which was launched in February 2011 and later shut down by American investigation agency FBI.
The websites in the Darknet offer the safest option for drug peddling both for the buyer and the seller. The contraband is delivered by courier anywhere leaving no traces of the seller or its origin. As it uses cryptocurrencies as the mode of transaction, it eliminates the danger of being caught in the conventional way.
The major reason why it is not growing fast in the state is the lack of technical skill needed to operate it and the lack of awareness in bitcoin transaction. Cryptocurrency-based illegal deals are popular in foreign countries, and India is heading towards becoming the next hub in those deals, according to officials.
The Darknet is most popular in countries like Venezuela and Cambodia. People buy the items in bulk. But the bulk quantity is transferred only after establishing a good rapport with the buyer. At the same time, many cheating cases also prevail in this area as the buyers do not complain to the police.
