Pre-monsoon drive in Thiruvananthapuram

A top official of the DMO said ‘dry day’ observation will kick off from Sunday.

Thiruvananthapuram: In an effort to combat mosquito-borne and water-borne diseases in the state capital, the district medical office has decided to launch pre-monsoon drive on Saturday. A top official of the DMO said ‘dry day’ observation will kick off from Sunday.

“We have given direction to all public offices in the district to clean up their premises ahead of the monsoon. Our workers will be closely monitoring these activities. All educational institutions should carry out pre-monsoon cleaning on Fridays,” said the official. This year we decided to launch the drive much-early to avoid disease outbreaks. “Chlorination of water bodies would be done as part of the drive,” said the official.

ASHA workers, Arogya Sena and health workers would carry out the drives which would be focusing on source reduction activities, spraying and cleaning.

“We have four fogging machines and have the machinery to do the drives,” said the official.

According to officials, there is no alarming situation in the district as the number of cases being reported is comparatively low compared to previous years. “We are waiting for the plan funds which would be released soon,” said the official.

However, the corporation has only 50 mosquito workers to cover all hundred wards. An official of the health wing said that other health workers are being mobilised for anti-mosquito drives in each wards. “Spraying and fogging is happening routinely and there is no major outbreak in the corporation limits,” the official added.
