Hyderabad: Metro goes extra mile for women

Taruni Madhuranagar station has an all-women crew.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) will be conducting a 60-day women-centric exhibition at the Taruni Madhuranagar station, which is perhaps the first-ever station in India which is managed by women only.

The HMRL managing director N.V.S. Reddy said told mediapersons that there will be an online slogan competition on topics that broadly cover the celebration of womanhood, like — women as the pillars of Indian values and family systems, the importance of female education, and the appreciation of different roles of women as daughters, granddaughters, sisters, wives, mothers, and grandmothers, among many others.

Mr Reddy said that the Hyderabad Metro Rail is the first organisation in the country, and perhaps even in the world, to have set up the all-female managed station at Madhuranagar.

The station on Corridor-III, the Blue Line, has been renamed as Taruni Madhuranagar, said officials.

He said that while the station is open for all passengers, it will be managed by female employees only and will soon also have shops to cater exclusively to women and children.

Mr Reddy said, “The HMRL looks at the project not just as a transportation engineering project but also as an instrument to promote wider socio-economic goals.”

“As part of this vision, the Taruni Madhuranagar station, along with the two-acre open area which surrounds it, is being developed into a hub to promote women empowerment and gender equality,” he added.
