253 candidates in fray, highest in Wayanad

Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 253 candidates are in the fray after the scrutiny with 54 nominations rejected while the legality on the candidacy of Saritha S. Nair, facing many cheating cases, will be decided on Saturday.

Ms Nair had submitted her nominations from both Wayanad and Ernakulam.

Though she claimed that she has got a stay in the three cases, she could not submit details. She has been asked to provide them before 10.30 a.m. on Saturday failing which her candidature will be made invalid.

Though BJP had raised objections to the nomination of Congress candidate in Attingal, Adoor Prakash, the returning officer rejected them.

The highest number of candidates is in Wayanad, 22, followed by Attingal, 21. The least numbers are in Kottayam, seven, and Idukki, eight.

The total number of candidates in Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, Kasargod and Thrissur is nine each, in Thiruvananthapuram 18, Alappuzha and Mavelikkara 12, Chalakudi 13 and Ernakulam and Ponnani 14 each. The total candidates in the state for 20 Lok Sabha constituencies is 303 as of now. The last date for withdrawing the nominations is April 12.

Kerala goes to polls on April 23. The final number of candidates in the fray will be known only after the last date of withdrawal of nominations.
