Chennai: Anna University’s new vice-chancellor M.K. Surappa said that he would further strengthen the technical university’s reputation and standing in the country and global level.
A few hours after being appointed as the vice-chancellor of the largest technical universities in the country he spoke to Deccan Chronicle on various issues including his unfamiliarity with state universities and his plans to make the recruitment process corruption free. The excerpts:-
Q How do you feel after getting appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Anna University?
It’s a very challenging position for me. In all my previous positions, I have taken the institutions as far as the highest level. The first time, I got the chance to work with the state university which is on much larger size. I think I need all my experience and ability to take it to further heights. It is already a good place and has the great legacy. It also delivered many good things. It is time to rejuvenate state universities and I have an opportunity to further strengthen its reputation and its standing in the country and global level. I will do it.
Q What is your roadmap for the university?
Overall, I want to make it as an impactful university. Impact in the sense of teaching, learning, research and innovation, incubation, governance and transparency. Western Universities are able to reach high level because of their academic excellence and governance excellence. Only when this two can go together, the institution can grow further more and more
Q You are completely new to this university. How do you see this challenge?
It is true that I have not worked with the state universities. But I have friends in state universities and heard about their working style in great detail. I think there is a great talent and that talent has to be nurtured. Removing the pessimism will be one greater challenge.
Q There are allegations of corruption in recruitment in the previous Vice-Chancellor’s tenure. How will you make the recruitment process free from corruption?
In IIT Ropar, we have recruited 70 faculty members without any bias and prejudice. I used to get renowned experts in all the selection committees. I will repeat the same. I will bring renowned experts in the recruitment committees and will go by their advice and opinion while appointing the faculty members.
