Admission regularisation: What's next for government to be under Supreme Court lens

According to government sources, since the GO has become null and void the entire process will begin afresh.

Thiruvananthapuram: With the passing of Kerala Professional Colleges (Regularisation of Admission in Medical Colleges) Bill, 2018, the Government order regularising the admissions in two medical colleges would become infructuous. According to government sources, since the GO has become null and void the entire process will begin afresh. As per the provisions of the Bill which was passed by Assembly on Thursday, the Admission Supervisory Committee will be the competent authority to decide on matters of admission and regularisation of admissions.

So the evidence and claims related to admission could be examined again by the committee subject to scrutiny by Supreme Court which had stayed the ordinance on Thursday. There is another view that once the Bill receives the assent of Governor it would be published in Gazette and come into force as the new law from the date of its implementation. So there is still confusion whether the new law would be applicable to the earlier process.

Sources said the possibility of entire process getting started afresh would depend on the Supreme Court verdict on the issue later. The court is likely to examine both the previous ordinance on the basis of which the infructuous GO was issued regularising the admissions in the two colleges and the provisions made in the Bill to ascertain the nature of changes. Clearly, there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel for the students at the moment.
