I want to learn Tamil, says new CJ of Madras HC

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami was also present during the swearing-in ceremony.

Chennai: Observing that Tamil is one of the longest surviving classical languages, Chief Justice Indira Banerjee of the Madras high court on Wednesday said, "For long, I wanted to learn Tamil language and read some of the Tamil literature. I hope now I will get an opportunity to do it".

Replying to the welcome address delivered by advocate general R.Muthukumaraswamy at a simple function held on the premises of the high court, after she was sworn in as Chief Justice of Madras high court at Raj Bhavan, Justice Indira Banerjee said Tamil Nadu has rich heritage and history. The architecture is wonderful, she added.

As a tourist, she has visited almost all the important places in the state and she is really glad that she has the opportunity to actually live in Tamil Nadu. Tamil is possibly the only language which is official language in many foreign countries as well, she added.

She said the Madras high court has produced many legal luminaries and contributed to the development of law. Its path breaking judgments in many branches of law extensively cited in many high courts including Delhi and Calcutta.

Earlier, Justice Indira Banerjee sworn in as Chief Justice of the Madras high court at a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan. Tamil Nadu Governor Ch.Vidyasagar Rao administered the oath of office to her. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami was also present during the swearing-in ceremony.
