EC brings in 22 new police officers for north Chennai
Chennai: As many as 22 police officers from the rank of additional commissioner of police to inspector were transferred out from north Chennai on Wednesday following instructions from the election commission, after widespread complaints about distribution of cash and gifts for votes started pouring in during the RK Nagar bypoll campaign. Sources in the Election Commission said the changes in police and other official machinery are happening because of widespread complaints of voters being bribed.
HM Jayaram, inspector general of police — operations, has been posted as the new additional commissioner of police, law and order, North, Chennai in the place of MC Sarangan. N. Baskaran, DIG, social justice and human rights commission, has been posted as the joint commissioner, L&O, North Chennai in place of Joshi Nirmal Kumar. Sashank Sai, deputy commissioner, Flower Bazaar has been asked to take charge as DC, Washermenpet, in place of A. Jayakumar. Ramar, DC, Security has been posted as DC, Pulianthope, in place of Selvakumar.
Similarly, law and order assistant commissioners of police of Washermenpet, Tiruvotriyur, MKB Nagar and Royapuram were also changed. The law and order inspectors and crime inspectors of 7 police stations - R K Nagar, Tondiarpet, New Washermenpet, Korukkupet, Fishing harbour, Kodungaiyur and Kasimedu - were also changed based on EC’s orders.
WhatsApp helpline for RK Nagar Bypoll
Chennai: The city police launched a WhatsApp helpline ahead of the RK Nagar bypolls to report poll related irregularities and violations in the constituency, on Wednesday.
According to a release, complaints can be sent to 99405 99465. The number will be accessible round the clock and appropriate actions will be taken on complaints.
