Tottering building poses danger
Hyderabad: Another mishap along the lines of the City Light Hotel collapse is in the offing if the GHMC does not demolish a more than 100-year-old dilapidated building located at Bazarghat, Nampally. This dilapidated building has a school and a temple adjacent to it and is on the main road leading to the Nampally railway station. On March 28, part of the building had collapsed and two workers were injured.
Mr Mohd. Abdul Gafoor, one of the owners of the building said, “It is a prime two-storey structure at Nampally crossroad, opposite Dargah Yousufain, bearing house number 11-6-426. The building is very weak and is collapsing in bits and pieces. Originally the house belonged to my grandfather Hakeem Mahmood Khan. He had four sons, I was born to the eldest son. Presently a hotel is operated here that is leased out by my father’s brothers. There are also nine shops and a temple adjacent to the building.”
“If it collapses many will be affected. Despite several requests and reminders to the GHMC for demolition since 2007, no action has been taken,” he said. Town planning officials at the Khairatabad Circle GHMC office said that an inspection would be conducted and if the building was not stable, a notice would be issued followed by demolition. Prior to the monsoons, the GHMC should identify dilapidated buildings, question the owners regarding the buildings’ stability certificate. If the owners fail to submit the same, the GHMC should issue notices. If no action is taken by the owner, it can demolish the building.
