Chennai: Rs 1.53 crore unaccounted cash seized from man on bus

The seizure was made by the city NIB CID from a 47-year old man from Hyderabad who was travelling to Chennai.

Chennai: Unaccounted cash to the tune of Rs 1.53 crore was seized from a man on bus by the NIB CID (Narcotics Intelligence Bureau) the Tiruvallur - Andhra Pradesh border on Tuesday morning. The passenger was taken into custody, police said.

According to police, based on the specific inputs, the vehicle checking was intensified at the Arambakkam on the Chennai - Tiruttani highroad.

The seizure was made by the city NIB CID (Narcotics Intelligence Bureau) from a 47-year old man from Hyderabad who was travelling to Chennai. “On Monday at around 7 am, a private bus was checked wherin when a big trolley bag was foundkept inside the luggage space in the bus. On search it was found that the bag was filled with cash of Rs 500 and Rs 2000 denominations,” said a police officer.

Police said the man, of whom the bag belonged, was identified as O. Neeraj Gupta. Police said, Neeraj could not provide any supporting documentation to account for the cash, police said, adding the seized notes have been sent to the bank for verifying their genuineness after which further action would be taken. Neeraj was handed over to the Income Tax department officials for further enquiry.

The total money valued to Rs 1.53 crore was seized from him.
