Chennai: Kin of woman who died post delivery demand justice

The victim's family alleged that a delay in the surgery caused the double death.

Chennai: Family members of a 25-year-old woman, who passed away after her newborn baby allegedly died during delivery at the Chengalpattu government hospital, protested on Tuesday morning alleging medical negligence on part of the authorities.

The victim’s family alleged that a delay in the surgery caused the double death. The deceased, identified as Agastya, was a resident of Kuvathur in Kancheepuram. She was admitted at the Chengalpattu Government Hospital on February 27 after she went into labour.

The victim’s husband, Gopinath, alleged that she was suffering severe pain on Sunday night. Unfortunately, only the nurses in the hospital attended to her then. On Monday morning, during the surgery, the doctors declared that their baby was born in a breech position and could not be saved but the mother’s health was in a good condition. On Tuesday morning, though, the doctors pronounced Agastya dead due to suffocation. Her family members alleged that the newborn baby died during the delivery due to the doctors’ negligence, while her condition began to deteriorate after giving birth to the baby.

The frustrated family members protested in front of the Chengalpattu revenue divisional office for the authorities to take action against the doctors. They refused to get her body and lodged a complaint with the Chengalpattu police.

An inquiry into the death of the woman and her baby was ordered and further investigation is on.
