Time to pool anti-BJP votes, feels Tripura CPM

The CPM leader said the first and foremost task before the party at the moment was to build the independent strength of the Left parties.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPM Tripura state secretary Bijen Dhar on Monday said the defeat of the Left parties reinforces the need for maximizing the pooling of anti-BJP votes across the country. Mr Dhar told DC that the CPM draft political tactical line which will be discussed at the 22nd party Congress in Hyderabad would take a call on the future tactics of the party in connection with electoral understanding. "We have said categorically that there will be no electoral alliance or understanding with the Congress. But appropriate tactics will be adopted depending on the ground situation at the time of elections.

The draft and the amendments sent by individual members and units will be discussed in Hyderabad before adopting the political tactical line," he said while giving enough hints that there might be slight changes. The CPM leader said the first and foremost task before the party at the moment was to build the independent strength of the Left parties. This should be followed by serious attempts to have a broad understanding with secular and democratic parties for a wider platform.

"In many states, the independent strength of Left parties is very less. The party has always called upon its members, cadre and sympathisers in such places to vote for the candidate who is best placed to defeat the BJP," said Mr Dhar. When asked whether the party would then vote for Congress candidates to defeat BJP, the Tripura state secretary said: "I am saying the candidates who are capable of defeating the BJP. This tactics we have been adopting in states where the Left is weak." he added.
