CPM cadre allege attack in Tripura

CPM Tripura state secretary Bijen Dhar said 580 shops and small business establishments have been either set on fire or attacked across the state.

THIRUVNANTHAPRUAM: Widespread attacks continue on the offices and cadre of CPM across Tripura after the victory of BJP-IFPT alliance in the assembly polls. CPM Tripura state secretary Bijen Dhar told DC that till Sunday night 153 party offices had been either burnt or ransacked. More than 400 workers have sustained injuries in a series of attacks carried out allegedly by BJP and IFPT hoodlums in many parts of the state.

"The violence is continuing unabated and we are being flooded reports from across the state. The party leaders have approached respective district administration seeking intervention to check the organised violence against party offices and workers," he said. Mr Dhar said 580 shops and small business establishments have been either set on fire or attacked across the state. Offices of Trade unions, mass organisatoins and SC Coordination committee offices are being targeted extensively. "In main land, the attacks are being led by BJP works while in the highland and tribal areas it is the IPFT," he added.

When asked whether the CPM is planning to mobilise the cadre to counter the attack, the state secretary said at the moment the party wanted the administration to intervene. A petition will be submitted to DGP. “We appeal to the people to maintain peace,” he said and added that his party would take steps to defend its cadre if the administration failed to contain violence.
