KOCHI: One of the lowest birth-weight babies in the country having 625 grams has toddled to life safely at a Muvattupuzha hospital, near here. The newborn brings home happiness for the Thulasidas and Bindu couple.
It was on November 3, 2015 that Bindu, a resident of Meleaparmabu, Ravi Nagar, Nattika in Thrisssur, gave birth to a baby girl. The baby was born in 25 weeks, with a weigh of 625 grams, against a full term pregnancy of 37 weeks and the normal weight of around 3 kg.
The situation was a challenge to the team at Sabine Hospital and Research Centre at Muvattupuzha. Spending more than a hundred days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit under the attention of a medical team comprising of Dr Jegantha Jayaraj, Dr Abraham, Dr. Lisie, and 25 nursing staff members, baby Meenakshi has toddled to life safely.
Thulasidas and Bindu had been longing for a baby for more than a decade and after a couple of abortions reached the hospital where she conceived again. This was after bad patch in life for Bindu when she lost her brother and father and Thulasidas left a career in Qatar.
Again as a shock, during the 25th week Bindu delivered a premature baby girl. It was the amniotic fluid leakage that led to the premature delivery. Baby Meenakshi has now gained about 1700 grams of weight and will leave the hospital for home shortly with parents, according to doctors.
