100 sovereigns of gold, cash burgled in Anna Nagar serial thefts
Chennai: In daring robberies committed in three places in the same locality on Monday night, thieves decamped with 100 sovereigns of gold ornaments and more than Rs 60 lakh in cash. Police suspect that the three burglaries must have been committed by the same team.
The first incident took place at the residence of a businessman Sathyanarayanan ( 51), who lives on the First Avenue, L Block, Anna Nagar. Sources said Satyanarayanan, who owns a car showroom at Perambur, had left to his native place in Andhra Pradesh four days back with his family.
On Tuesday morning, the domestic maid Kuppama went to the house and found the locks to the main door broken.
She rushed inside the house and found two bureaus inside the house broken and ransacked.
Kuppama immediately informed the house owner and alerted the police, said a police officer.
The family also reached the city on Tuesday afternoon and found 100 sovereigns of gold and Rs 60 lakh in cash stolen from the house.
A complaint was lodged at the Anna Nagar police station stating that the house was ransacked in their absence, and jewellery and cash stolen.
Anna Nagar police registered a case and investigations are on.
