Hyderabad: Municipal administration minister K. Taraka Rama Rao held a review meeting to discuss making gram panchayats independent urban local bodies within the radius of Outer Ring Road. The meeting involved MA&UD and panchayat raj officials, and public representatives.
The state government decided to merge major gram panchayats into the urban local bodies which were within 5 km radius and had a population of more than 15,000. The government decided to identify gram panchayats with urban characteristics to either merge them with the nearest urban local body or make them independent.
He asked officials to explore the possibilities of making panchayats within the ORR to independent ULBs. He asked officials to spell out the benefits of ULBs to people.
