KOZHIKODE: The farmers' groups have hailed the budgetary provisions for setting up a modern hi-tech coffee processing unit in Wayanad and to brand the Wayanad coffee which is grown in the carbon neutral green zones of the district, thus fetching a premium price for farmers.   Finance minister Thomas Isaac in his budget speech on Friday had said that the fund for setting  up the plant and other facilities could be availed of from the Rs 10-crore corpus of Wayanad package announced in the budget.

The farmers' organisations have been demanding the setting up an instant coffee unit in the district  to tap the potential of instant coffee industry. Though a project was planned earlier, it failed to take wings, it was pointed out. Former Sulthan Bathery MLA P. Krishnaprasad told DC that the price of processed coffee beans is around Rs 120 per kilogram.  "You can produce one kilogram of instant coffee powder from 2.5 kilograms of beans. So spending Rs 300, we will get the raw material for 1 kilogram of coffee powder. By selling the coffee powder for around Rs 2,000 per kilogram, we will be able to ensure a much better price, almost double, for farmers," he said.

According to Wayanad Coffee Growers' Association, there are 60,000 households in the district which directly depend  on coffee for  sustenance.  Association president Prasanth Rajesh welcomed the idea to brand Wayanad coffee.  "But there should be an ideal farming environment for farmers in Wayanad," he added. "We are happy that the government is serious with the branding process," he said.
