Astro meet begins in Osmania University
Hyderabad: About 400 scientists, young faculty, researchers and students from across the country and abroad, have come to participate in the 36th annual general meeting of the Astronomical Society of India (ASI) that is being held at the Osmania University from February 5 to 9.
The Astronomical Society of India is the oldest and largest association of professional astronomers in the country and was, in fact, founded in Osmania University in 1972. The annual meetings of ASI are held in a different city every year and they are returning to their Hyderabad home after a gap of 11 years.
There will be more than 100 scientific talks and 170 posters presented at this meeting, from scientists based in universities as well as research institutes.
Some of these talks will be on their latest discoveries and some of them based on results from many new Indian observatories like AstroSat which is a satellite in space, and the upgraded GMRT, a radio telescope near Pune.
There will also be discussions on future observatories . These are Aditya L-1, a solar mission to be launched by ISRO and LIGO-India, a gravitational wave observatory.
They also include international projects like the Square Kilometre Array and the Thirty Metre Telescope, of which India is a key partner.
