48 custodial deaths between 2012, 2017: State to Karnataka High Court

The court was hearing a suo motu case which was initiated based on a direction issued to all the high courts by the Supreme Court.

Bengaluru: The state government, in an affidavit, told the Karnataka High Court that 48 unnatural deaths have occurred in prisons in the state between January 2012 and October 2017. Of these, compensation has been paid in one case.

The court was hearing a suo motu case which was initiated based on a direction issued to all the high courts by the Supreme Court.

The report stated that of the 48 unnatural death cases, 21 are pending and 26 have been disposed of.
