Hyderabad: Huge delay hits model markets

Vendors continue to function from dilapidated structures, and the issue was raised several times but to no avail.

Hyderabad: The model vegetable markets proposed in the Old City have a long way to go. Only a couple of them at Rajendernagar are nearing completion but the others in Malakpet, Talabkatta, Riyasatnagar and Subramanyam Colony are yet to see the light of the day. According to information from an RTI query filed by activist Md Abdul, work on only one market is nearing completion and work on six others are in progress. These were to be completed in 100 days under the GHMC’s programme.

Vendors continue to function from dilapidated structures, and the issue was raised several times but to no avail.

“The concept of model markets was proposed to eradicate the market mafia which was looting the vendors. Why is the GHMC taking so long to complete the work,” asked Mr Amjadullah Khan of the MBT.

He said that existing markets were being demolished and work on the new structures were being delayed, leaving vendors with no space.

Asked about the delays, Mr Srinivas Reddy, GHMC south zone commissioner, said, “Tenders will be called to allot space in the market which is ready complete at Rajendranagar. The remaining markets will also be complete.” He did not give a timeline.
