On August 17, 2017, Chief Minister Edappadi K.Palaniswami announced that his government would convert Veda Nilayam into a memorial.

Chennai: The Madras high court has adjourned to January 19, the hearing of a PIL, which sought a direction to the state government to cancel a GO relating to converting the residence of former Chief Minister late J.Jayalalithaa at Veda Nilayam in Poes Garden as a government me-
morial.

The First Bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose adjourned to January 19, the hearing of the PIL filed by social activist Traffic Ramaswamy, after his counsel sought time to produce orders relating to recovery of fine imposed on Jayalalithaa.

Ramaswamy in his petition sought to restrain the government from acquiring and converting the Poes Garden residence of Jayalalithaa as a memorial using public funds.

He claimed that the government should not be allowed to build a memorial for Jayalalithaa, "who was declared as a convict in the disproportionate assets case by the Supreme court".
