OOTY: Nilgiris district fared better in crime control on the law and order front in 2017, besides performing well in traffic management in the peak summer season, said Mr. Murali Rambha, SP of Nilgiris. He solicited the cooperation of hill residents to improve the situation in 2018 also.
While there were about 114 cases of crime reported in 2016, property lost was to the tune of Rs 73.78 lakh. Property recovered was to the tune of Rs 51.68 lakh. The percentage of detection was 84 per cent and that of recovery 70 per cent in 2016, Shri. Rambha said.
During 2017, the percentage of detection was 90 per cent and recovery was 71 per cent, as police recovered Rs.68.54 lakh worth property out of Rs.96.96 lakh which was lost in 114 crime cases registered in 2017. While there were ten murders and 228 hurt cases in 2016, in 2017 there were only six cases of murder and 161 hurt cases recorded across the hills. Though six persons had been detained under the Goonda’s Act in 2016, nine persons were detained under the same Act in 2017, he noted. Referring to cases under the Motor Vehicles Act, in 2017, police booked 1.98 lakh cases and imposed fines to the extent of Rs 2.97 crore.
