Chennai: New helpline for public to report traffic violations

The public can also share information on other traffic violations on this helpline.

Chennai: City traffic police have launched a helpline for the public to identify bikers dragging police barricades on city roads, as seen in two videos that went viral on Thursday.

The public can send an SMS or WhatsApp on the helpline 90031 30103, according to a senior traffic police officer.

The public can also share information on other traffic violations on this helpline.

The viral videos, shot by the fellow gang of bikers, showed pillion riders dragging metal barricades of city police for several hundred metres before they let it off. Police said that the incidents happened on Kamarajar Salai and on Gandhi Mandapam road near Kotturpuram, but couldn’t ascertain when.

Apart from the menace to the public, the video also poses tough questions on traffic enforcement by city traffic police to rein in rowdy bikers.

Police said that they have already registered a case and launched a hunt for the suspects.

About 10 days ago, police came down heavily on overspeeding bikers by seizing about 100 motorbikes on Santhome high road. FIR was registered against more than 80 of them under various sections in several police stations in Mylapore district.
