Telangana: Orphans get SC status, Muslims too to benefit
Hyderabad: The TS government has extended Scheduled Caste status to orphans in the state. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao made an announcement to this effect in the Assembly on Thursday. He said that orphan students need not submit any income certificate to avail fee reimbursement or scholarships.
BJP leader G. Kishan Reddy highlighted the plight of 30 engineering students who are orphans and staying at an orphanage in Saidabad. He informed the House that these students could not avail fee reimbursement scheme or scholarships since they do not possess income certificates.
“Applicants need to submit income certificate to apply for fee reimbursement and scholarships. How can the orphans submit their parents’ income certificate? They don’t have parents,” the BJP MLA said.
The CM responded by directing officials to immediately issue orders exempting orphans from submitting income certificates. Responding to MIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi, Mr Rao said orders extending similar benefits to Muslims will be issued soon.
