Telangana: Cab drivers to continue protests

The protesting cab drivers said they will be continuing the strike by driving around the city in their cars.

Hyderabad: Cab drivers in the city continued their indefinite hunger strike and protest programmes on Thursday. They announced that the drivers would hold a protest at the Chief Minister’s camp office.

General Secretary of Telangana Cab Drivers and Operators’ Association (TCDOA) K. Satyanarayana said their leaders, including TSDOA president V. Shiva, and others continued their hunger strike on Thursday.

“After police arrested our leaders from Dharna Chowk on Wednesday, they shifted the strike camp to Manikonda near Uber’s head office. We continued our strike under a banyan tree by obtaining permission from local sarpanch. But, the police urged the sarpanch to cancel the permission and now, we are continuing the strike by roaming in city in cabs,” he said. Meanwhile, a team of cab drivers called on transport minister P. Mahender Reddy and explained the circumstances which forced them to go on strike.

The minister promised his help in resolving the cab drivers’ problems.

Both Ola or Uber have not responded and its unclear if they will be meeting the protesters to resolve the ongoing dispute.
