Truck overturns near Perungalathur
Chennai: Traffic on the Maduravoyal-Tambaram bypass road was disrupted for more than five hours on Wednesday morning after a concrete mixer truck overturned near Perungalathur. The driver of the truck sustained grievous injuries in the accident.
Sources said the heavy vehicle was carrying cement mixture from a construction site in Anna Nagar and was heading towards Chengalpet when the accident took place. It is said the driver lost control and the heavy truck turned turtle around 6 a.m.
Heavy traffic disruption was caused on the GST Road on the Chennai-Tiruchy highway. The Chromepet traffic police, who were alerted immediately, barricaded the road but as cranes were not available, a heavy traffic jam resulted, causing severe hardship to the motorists. The vehicles were diverted towards Mudichur Salai.
Overloading, may have led to the toppling of the vehicle, police sources said. The resultant traffic jam affected thousands of office-goers and motorists. Luckily, there were no fatalities in the accident because it happened early in the morning. The driver sustained injuries and was taken to the Chromepet government hospital.
