KPL match-fixing scandal: ‘Reveal all or else...’ Top cop to cricketers

Under the provisions of Criminal Procedure Code, cricketers can become approvers and help the police with the investigation.

Bengaluru: City Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao called upon cricketers to come forward and assist the police in the investigation of the KPL match-fixing scandal. “Do not wait until the police knock on your doors,” he warned.

Under the provisions of Criminal Procedure Code, cricketers can become approvers and help the police with the investigation. There are many more involved in the scam. The players can give information and prevent their own arrest, he said.

Film connection

After KPL matches, those from the film fraternity took part in parties. Some film stars were seen with the arrested coach and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) member Sudheendra Shinde besides managements of KPL teams, Mr Rao said.

“We are now investigating how a film star, who was seen hobnobbing with the KPL team management representatives, has become a big shot all of a sudden. By making just two movies, how can anyone make so much money,” he wondered.

Proof against Shinde

Mr Rao said KSCA member Sudheendra Shinde was arrested by the CCB on Tuesday as there was enough evidence to prove his involvement in match-fixing.

Mr Sandeep Patil, Joint Commissioner (Crime), said matches were fixed during the 2018-19 KPL tournament.

Accused Shinde runs Social Cricket Club in Jayanagar. Ashfaq Thar Ali, the owner of Belagavi Panthers, had visited the club and sponsored many players, who went on to find place in many cricket teams of KPL. These were the players who helped match-fixers, he said.

Shinde appeared before the CCB for questioning on Tuesday. However, he had not given answers to any questions. His statements contradicted witness accounts and the findings of the investigating team. His house was also raided by the CCB two days ago.

As Shinde was produced before the first ACMM court, he was in tears in the court hall. Sources said that he will be taken to police custody for further inquiry.
