Clean drains leading to SWDs: BBMP
Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has directed its officials to clean all the drains that connect to storm water drain as it has found that potholes are created on roads not just by rainwater but also because of water and sewage overflowing from choked drains. When water stagnates on the road, spots get dampened resulting in potholes, officials said.
“We have directed the officials to regularly clean all major and minor drains connecting storm water drains. Most of these outlets are choked because people and street vendors throw waste into them. As the water does not flow freely, roads get flooded,” said a senior BBMP official.
“When roads get damp because of flooding, craters form which turn into big potholes,” the official added.
“We will clean the drains frequently and we will also ensure that there are no gaps in drain covers, to prevent people from throwing waste into the drains. Storm water drains too will be cleaned regularly. We will carry out awareness programmes asking people not to dump waste into drains, as it chokes the flow of sewage water. We are planning to penalise people who dump waste into the drains,” another BBMP official said.
