Chennai: Drones assess Gaja damage to coconut trees

The research team has already mapped area with the help of UAVs before cyclone Gaja hit the region for flood mitigation map.

Chennai: Demonstrating its effectiveness in assessing the damages to trees post-cyclone Gaja in the delta region, a research team from Anna University has conducted a case study in which the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have recorded the damage caused to coconut trees with more than 95% accuracy.

The Centre for Aerospace Research in Madras Institute of Technology at Anna University conducted the study in the Moothakurichi village in Pattukottai Taluk in Thanjavur district affected by the cyclone. The research team has already mapped area with the help of UAVs before cyclone Gaja hit the region for flood mitigation map.

After the cyclone, the team conducted a case study on 4.69 hectares of land in survey no.2 to know the accuracy of damage assessment by drones.
