Kanyakumari: The DMK working president, M K Stalin, met Kanyakumari district collector on Monday and urged to quicken and intensify the relief measures to restore normalcy in the district devastated by the tropical cyclone, Ockhi.
Visiting the worst-hit areas including the coastal belts of Kanyakumari district, Stalin gave a patient hearing to the grievances of the people. On seeing Stalin coming to their village, hundreds of women fisher folks at the coastal hamlet, Neerodithurai surrounded him and poured out their grievances. They complained about the lethargy of the State Fisheries department that did not have proper details about the actual number of fishermen missing at sea.
Stalin also visited Suchindram and the villages around it and instructed all the three DMK MLAs--N Suresh Rajan of Nagercoil constituency, S Austin of Kanyakumari and T Mano Thangaraj of Padhmanabapuram constituency, to be fully involved in the relief measures along with the party workers.
Mr. Stalin also met the district collector, Sajjan Singh R Chavan and conveyed him the grievances poured out to him by the affected people. He impressed upon the collector to intensify the ongoing relief measures.
Later, speaking to media Stalin came down heavily on the Chief Minister for wasting public money in the name of MGR centenary celebrations, when a part of the state was severely affected by the cyclone and floods. Criticising the state administration for allocating a megre sum of Rs 25 crore for the relief work, the DMK leader wanted Mr. Edappadi Palaniswami to immediately announce individual compensation of '10 lakh to the kin of each of the fishermen who lost their lives at sea as done by the neighbouring Kerala government.
