Hyderabad : Shilparamam may survive new road plan

SRDP to be delayed at least by a year, say officials.

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to change the design of the elevated-rotary-cum-grade separator at the Cyber Towers junction under the strategic road development plan (SRDP) in order to minimise structural damage to Shilparamam village and minimise land acquisition.

According to the previous plan, the corporation would have to acquire 4.6 acres of private land and 1.77 acres of Shilparamam land.

Besides this, the GHMC has also decided not to begin construction of the controversial skyway near the KBR Park junction until it receives clearance from the Centre.

Officials claim that the project will be delayed at least by a year.
According to a GHMC official, the current design of the elevated-rotary-cum-grade separator at the Cyber Towers junction will disturb the exit from the main entrance.

Portions of the Night Bazaar at Shilparamam may have to be demolished for acquiring 1.77 acres of land.

Around 200 stalls would have to be relocated temporarily which would impair looks of the crafts village.

The 4.6 acres of private land that would have to be acquired would include several commercial establishments.

A senior GHMC official told Deccan Chronicle that the civic body has asked IIT-Hyderabad to conduct a comprehensive study for a new design for the elevated-rotary-cum-grade separator after a the issue was discussed in a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and municipal administration and urban development Minister K.T. Rama Rao.

The IIT-Hyderabad is to submit the project report by January.
When asked about the skyway at the KBR junction, the GHMC official said that the corporation would begin work on the flyover only after receiving clearance from the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change as it means a decrease in the eco-sensitive zone.

The state government wants the MoEF to decrease the ESZ of the KBR Park from the existing 25-35 metres to zero metres.

It will take at least six to eight months to get the necessary clearance, and financial constraints might push the project back to a year, the official said. But the land and property acquisition process has started, and GHMC has already paid '426.82 crore as compensation for the properties it has acquired.
