Chennai: The state government on Monday sanctioned Rs 82.13 crore for establishment of Veterinary College and Research Institute and Advanced Institute for Integrated Research in Livestock and Animal Sciences (AIIRLAS) on Thalaivasal Koot Road in Salem district.
The government sanctioned the fund based on the announcement of Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palanisamy in the Assembly under Rule 110 of TN Legislative Assembly on February 2019. The Veterinary College and Research Institute and AIIRLAS would be set up on 900 acres of land belonged to Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University adjacent to National Highway 79 on Thalaivasal Koot Road in Salem district.
The AIIRLAS will have facilities including Livestock Farm Complex, Livestock Products Technology Complex, Extension Education, Skill Training and Research Complex and Veterinary College and Research Institute.
Currently 360 seats are available for BVSc and Animal Husbandry courses at Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. This would be raised to 400 from 2020-21 year onwards, 420 from 2021-22 and 440 from 2022-23.
The Registrar, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, sought the government to sanction Rs 208 crore for establishment of full-fledged Veterinary College and Research Institute at AIIRLAS. The government after careful consideration sanctioned Rs 82.13 crore in two installment - Rs 50 from in 2019-20 and Rs 32.13 crore 2020-21 for civil and recurrent works for the establishment of new Veterinary College and Research Institute at the proposed site for establishment of AIIRLAS. The Registrar has been directed to obtain recognition from the Veterinary Council of India, New Delhi.
