Madras high court seeks time frame for ambulance facility

Chennai: The Madras high court has asked the Union and state government to come out with details as to within what period, the air ambulance services will be provided and the Medical College, Hospital will be established in Ooty.

A division bench comprising Justices N.Kirubakaran and P.Velmurugan was passing further interim orders on an appeal filed by the Madras Race Club, challenging an order of a single judge, which dismissed its petition against an order of the authorities directing the club to surrender 4.5 acres of land possessed by it.

The bench said with regard to the query raised by this court, whether it is possible to provide the facility of air ambulance services in case of medical emergencies to the people of Ooty, Additional Government Pleader V.Anandha Moorthy got instructions and filed a report and the same is appreciated. It is seen in the report furnished by Dr.Palanisamy that the Nilgiris district headquarters hospital situated at Udhagamandalam is the only higher referral centre for medical needs of the whole district comprising of six taluks. The hospital has facilities to provide care in the specialities viz ., general medicine, general surgery, orthopedics, paediatricts, obstretrics and gynaecology, ENT, Eye, Skin, Geriatrics, Pain and Palliative care, Dialysis, Trauma care, Medical ICU, Poison treatment centre, Snake bite treatment centre, Dental, Siddha, Homeopathy and Yoga and naturopathy, the bench added.

The bench said further the hospital was provided with advance investigation facilities viz., MRI, CT Scan, Digital X-ray, Ultrasound, Echo and Laboratory facilities for Biochemistry, Microbiology and Pathology. However, due to snakes bite, animal attacks (Gore injuries), heart attack and neurological problems, people were suffering, the report added and listed out the facilities required at the headquarters hospital, Nilgiris, the bench added. The bench said for establishment of Medical College, Hospital at Ooty, approval has to be given by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare represented by its secretary, Union of India and Government of Tamil Nadu, represented by its Secretary.
