Kochi: The test-piling for the super speciality block of the Ernakulam Government Medical College (EMC) will begin next week before starting works on the project.

The PPP firm INKEL, contracted to implement the project, has given the civil works sub-contract to Chennai-based PST Engineering. The new super speciality block of EMC in 8.3 lakh sq ft is spread across eight floors and shall have 683 beds and 14 operation theatres.

The major departments envisaged in the new block are cardiology & Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Gastroenterology & Gastro Surgery, Urology & Nephrology, Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Dental & Maxillofacial and Interventional Radiology.

In addition to the above, there shall be a well-equipped casualty, laboratory, pharmacy and store. The support services proposed at the new block include diet kitchen, CSSD, power laundry, medical gas system, pneumatic tube system and lifts.

The KIIFB has sanctioned Rs 285.31 crore for the project, and the civil works went for tendering in May for Rs 150.74 crore. The PST was the lowest bidder quoting 14% below estimate at Rs 129.63 crore.

The environment-friendly building will have facilities for rainwater harvesting, a 300KW solar plant, 550 KLD sewage treatment plant with treated water reuse for the flush, a 3-metre-wide ramp with proper landing space, AC plant and landscaping. Centrally air-conditioned, it will have enough car parking space and power backup.

The project has already received environmental clearance from State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) and a no objection certificate from Kalamassery Municipality for building permit. INKEL had given the Cochin Cancer Research Centre civil works on the EMC campus to Chennai-based P&C Projects.
