Resistance to medicines hinders recovery
Hyderabad: A bio-repository of resistant microbes has been set up by the department of biotechnology which will collect and preserve the drug resistant microbes for scientific investigation.
The repository has been set up at the National Centre for Microbial Resource in Pune.
The facility comes as a boon for clinicians and researchers who are studying the anti-microbial resistance.
Samples of infective agents can be collected from urine, blood, tissue, cells, DNA, RNA and protein from humans. This attempt has been made to understand the manner in which ‘super bugs’ are affecting humans.
Despite the red line campaign by the government, antibiotic resistance is a major cause of concern and the fight is a prolonged one, experts said. With the dearth of drug control inspectors, retail chemists are not covered effectively. This leaves gaps in the system adding to the problem in the form of over-the-counter sales of powerful antibiotics.
