Chennai: UK minister meets corporation school students

The K.P. Street High School established their current student club in July 2017.

CHENNAI: The corporation high school on K.P. Street, Mylapore, was abuzz on Wednesday morning as Mark Field, UK Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Office, met a student club formed through British Council’s Pudumai Palli Project being implemented in partnership with Greater Chennai Corporation.

The project, started in 2015, aims to build a sustainable system to support in-service teacher education, improve the livelihood prospects of students, particularly girls and help the students acquire 21st century skills.

“The British Council and the Greater Chennai Corporation are developing 21st century skills in more than 4,000 students and supporting over 200 teachers,” said the minister.

Mei-kwei Barker, Director, British Council South India who was also present at the event opined that leading student clubs have given the girls a boost to their confidence and developed leadership. The clubs have become aware of a number of social issues, including child labour, drug abuse, environmental issues, and sanitation as part of the school level project.

According to members of the British Council, Pudumai Palli project has so far impacted 70 head teachers, 140 teachers, 408 student leaders, 3500 students directly and over 6,000 students indirectly from the time of its introduction.

The K.P. Street High School established their current student club in July 2017, following a two-day club leaders’ workshop conducted by the British Council earlier in the same month.
