Telangana Rains: IMD Puts Few Districts on Red Alert

The city recorded the highest rainfall of the year with above 105 mm rainfall in all the six GHMC zones

HYDERABAD: Rain unleashed fury in the city with a very heavy downpour that started from the early morning hours on Tuesday submerging and water-logging many areas in the city.

The city recorded the highest rainfall of the year with above 105 mm rainfall in all six GHMC zones.

The IMD said moderate to heavy rains in the red category were recorded in Hyderabad and surrounding areas of Rangareddy, Sangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri.

The highest rainfall recorded was in Miyapur at 147.5 mm, followed by Hyder Nagar at 143.8 mm and Sivaramapalle at 130.8 mm, as per the TS Development and Planning Society.

Upperpally near Attapur, DeenDayal Nagar, Prashanth Nagar, Pragathi Nagar, Manikonda, Alwal, Ibrahimbagh, Hitec city, Vani Nagar, Malakpet, Sri Nagar Colony, Banjara Hills, Lakdi Ka Pul, Punjagutta, Madhapur, Ganesh Nagar, Chintal, Yousufguda, were some of the worst affected areas in the city with heavy water-logging and submersion.

The government has declared a holiday on Tuesday for all educational institutions including schools and colleges owing to the heavy rains in the city.

As per IMD, a low pressure area has formed under the influence of cyclonic circulation in the northnorthwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal off South Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts.

The city has been put on orange alert by the IMD for Tuesday as moderate to heavy rains with intense spells are very likely with surface winds of around 10-12 kmph.

The IMD issued warning that heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning would occur in several districts of Telangana on Tuesday. Red alert was issued for 7 district, orange alert for 17 districts and yellow alert for 9 districts.

The districts for which red alert was issued included Hyderabad, Medak, Medchal, Malkajgiri, Rangareddy, Sangareddy, Siddipet, Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri.

Orange alert was issued for Jagtial, Jangaon, Jayashankar Bhupalapalli, Kamareddy, Karimnagar, Mahabubabad, Mahabubnagar, Mancherial, Mulug, Narayanpet, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Peddapalli, Rajanna Sircilla, Vikarabad, Warangal and Hanamkonda

Yellow alert was issued for Adilabad, Kumarambheem, Jogulamba Gadwal, Khammam, Bhadradri, Kothagudem, Nagarkurnool, Nalgonda, Suryapet and Wanaparthy.
