Hyderabad IIT to find ways to stop hydrogen leak
Hyderabad: Hydrogen leaks are extremely dangerous as it is highly inflammable and to detect these leaks, a collaborative research of IIT Hyderabad and IIT Jodhpur was carried out to develop materials to solve the problem.
The study was published in the peer-reviewed journal Sensors and Actuators.
The enormous promise of hydrogen economy cannot be realized as a leak is a major factor and it can lead to major mishaps.
The Research Team synthesised a semiconductor material that could be used as a sensitive detector of hydrogen gas.
There are two problems associated with the gas and one is that it is difficult to produce, and the second is that it is hard to detect. Detecting hydrogen leak is important as if it is not detected immediately and there can be a catastrophe due to its highly inflammable nature.
So, hydrogen sensors have been developed by using nano particles of zinc oxide and these are then bundled to look like cotton candy.
According to the journal, the experiment found that there was easy diffusion of hydrogen gas through nanopores that deposited on nanofibres and that helped to improve sensitivity in detecting hydrogen gas.
