Bishop's arrest may be delayed

Decision after IG verifies probe file.

Kochi: The further course of action, including the arrest of Bishop Franco Mulakkal facing allegations of serial rape of a nun, will be delayed.

This has emerged after the marathon meeting held at the office of the Inspector-General (Ernakulam range) of police between Inspector General Vijay Sakhare, Kottayam superintendent of police Hari Sankar and Vaikom deputy superintendent P K. Subhash.

After the meeting which ended at 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Mr Hari Sankar said that they had decided on the action to be taken in the next seven days.

"The discussion was only about the investigation and evidence collected during the investigation. We haven't discussed anything about the arrest," Mr Hari Sankar told Deccan Chronicle."There will be a meeting again after a week and further decisions will be taken then," he added.

It is also learnt that Mr Vijay Sakhare will verify the investigation files in detail and further action would depend on that. Meanwhile, Mr Subhash, who is investigating the case, said the team never faced pressure in the case.

Police sources confirmed that the bishop may be served a notice to appear before the police and the future proceedings will be taken on the basis of this.

The probe team also found that the statement given by the bishop that he was present at another convent at Muthalakodam near Thodupuzha on May 5, 2014 was wrong.
